I speak for those who can't speak for themselves.
It's walkin' time...
Hello and welcome (back) to my very special, very exciting fundraising page for iWalk for Animals 2016! Many of you have been here before. Some of you are visiting for the first time. ALL of you are going to want to donate by the end of this page.
Why, you ask?
Because if I know you, and I *think* I do, you love animals and you hate to see them suffer. And you understand how important it is that the Houston SPCA be able to open our doors to those animals, and the people who need us, every single day of the year.
We intervene on behalf of about 50,000 animals every year, but that doesn't mean we are taking that many animals out of cruel situations, or finding that many animals injured on the streets. A lot of those animals come from people with nowhere else to turn. Sometimes it's the loving owner who's just been laid off and can't afford to feed his two cats. Sometimes it's the single mother of four who has to move into a smaller apartment that doesn't allow large dogs.
Or sometimes, it's the victim of domestic violence who can't bring her beloved cat with her to the women's shelter so she refuses to leave him behind. Through our unique PetSafe program, the Houston SPCA temporarily boards the pets of those victims for free while they seek refuge from their abusers in a domestic violence shelter.
As for those animals that do need our help, we're there for them in rain or shine. This year, it's felt like a lot more rain than anything else. Houston has seen record flooding and, as a result, we've been on more water rescues over the last year than we have been in a very long time. As the de facto photographer for the shelter, I had the distinct honor of documenting my heroic coworkers as they risked their own lives to save animals from drowning in floodwaters.
I am so proud to be part of an organization that can help so many living beings in so many different ways.
But in order to help them, we need YOUR help. As a private non-profit organization, we rely solely on donations to keep our doors open.
Here are some smaller costs that we face every single day:
- For just $140, you can provide 100 of our cats with cardboard scratching posts in their kennels.
- For $120, 20 kitties get their Comfort Condos, safe places to hide in their kennels when they're feeling stressed.
- $100 helps cover the cost of medical testing for the senior dogs and cats in our Golden Paws program who are available to adopt at a discount.
- And when our field response teams drive to and from a cruelty report or injured animal rescue, it costs us about $120 to fuel and maintain our specialty vehicles. Your money can literally help save lives.
